Summary

Atheists often promote the idea that the universe, the Earth, and human beings are not unique or special in any way, but are ordinary, meaningless natural byproducts of indifferent forces of nature. This is sometimes referred to as the principle of mediocrity.

The best refutation of the principle of mediocrity is the extraordinary amount of fine-tuning of the laws and parameters of the universe that gave rise to human life. In other words, the universe is exactly the way it needs to be for you to be here, but the odds against that happening are staggering. The three explanations for this degree of fine-tuning are: chance, necessity, or design.

In this lecture, I’ll describe the laws and parameters of the universe that are finely tuned for human life and show that design is the best explanation for them.

Summary

Is there life immediately after death or only when Christ returns and we get our resurrection bodies?  Is there scientific evidence that we have a body and a spirit/soul? Does our spirit/soul continues to exist after our bodies die? Does the Bible give any insight regarding what will be our situation between the death of our physical body and our receiving our resurrection body when Christ returns.

Key biblical passages and more than 3,500 carefully documented cases of near-death experiences will be high-lighted, giving a compelling empirical basis to answer these questions.

Summary

For two thousand years, secular science held that the universe was eternal — no beginning, no end. This was clearly at odds with opening words of the Bible: “In the beginning… ”

However, that all began to change in the 20th century, with new evidence showing that the universe was not eternal, but had a beginning. By the late 1960s, with the strongest evidence yet, science had come to agree with the Bible that the universe was in fact created.

In this lecture, Dr. Salviander will present the logical argument and the scientific evidence for a created universe, and will show that the best explanation for it is the God of the Bible.

Summary

There has been a long and unfortunate conflict between Christianity and modern Science. Some of this conflict came to a head with the advent of modern geology and then later with Darwin. John Pye Smith, a 19th century British pastor and geologist wrote,

It is a fearful thing to array science and religion against each other; for, however unnatural and unjust this antagonist position certainly is, the fact of its existence is pregnant with evil on both sides. Men who have well studied the questions at issue, and who know the evidence of those geological facts to which such strong exception is taken, cannot by any possibility be brought to renounce their convictions”

–John Pye Smith (1774 – 1851; Theological Tutor at Homerton College, minister of the Old Gravel Pit Chapel in Chatham Place, and member of the Geological Society)

More recently, in 2010 Bruce Waltke, an eminent conservative Old Testament Scholar who once taught at DTS, was reportedly asked to leave Reformed Theological Seminary for writing that evolution and Christianity are compatible*.

In my presentation, I will talk about how biological organisms change and what the Bible says that is relevant to the question of origins. It is my conviction that when one understands the language, the Genesis account closely parallels the scientific history of life.

Summary

This is the second part of Dr. Wilson’s presentation from December 19th.

In the last few decades, scientists have become increasingly aware of the fact that the laws of physics seem precisely “fine-tuned” for the existence of complex life. In this lesson we will define over twenty processes and events that are necessary for life on Earth.

This series will demonstrate that the Earth and its local environment provide a delicate and exceedingly rare place for complex life.

The presentation slides are below (same as the previous week). Sorry, there is no audio for this lecture.

In addition to the PPt presentation, a twenty minute snippet from the DVD, Privileged Planet, will be shown. Due to the addition of the DVD, this lesson will be broken into two parts. Part 2 will be presented on January 2, 2018.

This series will demonstrate that the Earth and its local environment provide a delicate and exceedingly rare place for complex life.

Summary

In our postmodern America, many people are leaving the church — especially Millennials and Generation Xers. One of the driving forces among these younger generations is the belief that there is a conflict between Science and Religion. In a 2011 Barna survey on why young people are leaving the church, the
#3 reason was because “Churches come across as antagonistic to Science.”

Part 2 will focus on what we as Christians can do to change this perception.

  • We can use science to show the beauty and majesty of God’s creation
  • We can emphasize that the same God who created everything from subatomic particles to galaxies also created them
  • We can show them that there is harmony between scripture and science i.e. dual revelation
